Elena, a former member of the initiative group and personal assistant to presidential candidate Viktor Babariko, was detained by officers of the State Control Committee's Department of Financial Investigations in July 2020 as part of a criminal case opened under the article "tax evasion on an especially large scale" and placed in a KGB pretrial detention facility.
The arrests began after Viktor Babariko, the former head of Belgazprombank, announced his intention to run for president of Belarus.
