He was convicted because Zhodino policeman Nikolai Baranovsky considered himself insulted by his comment on social networks. At the trial, Dmitry Ivanov admitted his guilt and apologized to the policeman. He paid compensation for moral damage in the amount of one thousand rubles before the trial. Ivanov could not sit during the trial because of pain in his kidneys. Dmitry was released in the courtroom. The prosecutor asked the court to sentence the accused to two years in prison. On the day of the verdict, the man had a son.

Disagreeing with the punishment imposed due to its leniency, the Cherikov District Prosecutor filed an appeal. By decision of the Criminal Cases Panel of the Mogilev Regional Court, Ivanov was given a more severe punishment.

According to human rights activists , he was released on February 25, 2024, having fully served his sentence as determined by the court.
