In October 2024, she was convicted of “inciting hatred or discord” for comments about Lukashenko, security forces, and participants in the war in Ukraine, and sentenced to imprisonment.

The accusation is based on comments that Kotov left within a month and a half after the 2020 presidential election in Telegram channels recognized by extremist groups in the territory of the Republic of Belarus. The investigators of these telegram channels found evidence of crimes under 4 articles of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus.

As human rights activists note, such an interpretation of the article does not comply with international human rights standards, as evidenced by the practice of international judicial bodies.
