Eugene Illarionovich Burunov
Evgeniy Illarionovich Burunov is involved in politically motivated repressions in the Republic of Belarus. Burunov is responsible for the fact that, as a judge of the Vitebsk regional court, he makes politically motivated sentences against representatives of civil society. In judicial practice, Burunov considers not only administrative cases, but also criminal ones. As a result of his decisions, Belarusians who opposed the current regime in the country were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment. In particular, Burunov sentenced transplant surgeon Alexey Alekseychik to two and a half years of imprisonment under general regime conditions for calling for restrictive measures (sanctions) or other actions aimed at harming the national security of the Republic of Belarus (Part 3 Article 361 of the Criminal Code). Alexey Alekseychik worked for more than 20 years as a transplantologist at the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology. He performed many bone marrow transplant operations and is considered one of the best specialists in the center. He also sentenced a 53-year-old resident of Dokshitsy, Sergei Gribovich, for his intention to go to fight in Ukraine against Russian troops and sentenced him to 4 years and 6 months of imprisonment in a general regime colony. In 2023, he sentenced the family of political prisoners Vyacheslav Lazarev and Tatyana Pytko for cooperation with the Belsat channel to five and a half and three years in prison, respectively. Thus, Evgeniy Illarionovich Burunov is responsible for human rights violations and undermining the principles of the rule of law, as well as for promoting repression against representatives of civil society and the democratic opposition. His work within the judiciary is focused on maintaining the position of the existing government, rather than on enforcing the law. Burunov's actions contribute to human rights violations, strengthening the power of Alexander Lukashenko and increasing politically motivated repression in the Republic of Belarus.
